The Cetaqua, Water Technology Centre will led the LIFE ENRICH research project. The project will demonstrate a business model based on nutrients (N and P) recovery from urban WWTP and its valorisation as a fertilizer, looking at the whole value chain and considering the replicability of the business model across Europe. The project will validate an alternative sewage sludge treatment process, including the elutriation of sludge to increase nutrient recovery potential, the crystallisation of phosphorus as struvite and the recovery of nitrogen salts using membranes. The nutrient rich products obtained will be characterized and blended in order to optimise its agronomic value. The project will run from 09/2017 to 02/2021. For LIFE ENRICH, ESPP membership will enable exchange of experience with other nutrient recovery operators across Europe, validation of business model hypotheses with industry, fertiliser users and stakeholders and dissemination of project outcomes.
