NOTE: lysis is not itself a nutrient recovery process but breaks down organic matter and dissolves phosphorus, so making P available in solution for struvite or other precipitation processes. It has additional benefits for sludge digestion, the main driver for its installation.
Process description
Also known as the Thermal Hydrolysis process (THP), lysis breaks down organic components in the sludge, which improves digestion / biogas production and leads to a dryer sludge cake. Example: Cambi thermal hydrolysis operates typically at 150-170°C, 6 bars, 20-40 minutes. Breakdown of volatile solids improves methane production from anaerobic digesters and reduces required digester residence time, as well as releasing phosphorus into solution (ortho-phosphate). Heat is usually supplied indirectly via a heat exchanger, via steam or thermal oil.
