Input materials

Liquid fraction of organic wastes, manure or digestate: sewage sludge, manure or other biowastes.

Design avoids clogging and input liquor can contain up to 15% dry matter and/or with particles up to 12 mm.

-Unseparated liquid streams can be processed, but preferential set-up is with prior removal of solids, e.g. by centrifuge, cloth filter, filter press.

Output products

Ammonium sulphate (ASL 40% solution) or ammonium nitrate (ANL 50%) or ammonium bicarbonate (0.5% solution) or ammonia water (20%)

Process description

The liquid is heated and ammonia is stripped (off-gassed) from the liquid by a proprietary chemical process, and recovered. Ammonia stripping reduces toxicity in digesters, so increasing biogas production or improving biological treatment operation, depending on site configuration.

A heat exchanger allows for energy recovery

70 – 85 % recovery of ammonia-N can offer optimum OPEX – CAPEX, but higher N recovery rates are possible.

Operating status

Tully Centralised Anaerobic Digestion Plant, Northern Ireland: 40.000 t/y of poultry litter,  production of ASL.

Bio Energy Coevorden Netherlands : digestion of 300.000 t/y of manure and waste streams, production of ASL.

ZWAR, Bergen auf Rügen, Germany –  recovery of >80% of ammonium from works’ sludge digestate and from sludge dryer condensate.

Hardenberg, Netherlands – recovery of ammonia from waste streams as ammonium bicarbonate for further processing to fertilisers.
